During his internship at Fidelity Management & Research Company, Jonathan Murrell researched the changing demographic market shifts and how that affected projected industry revenues in orthopedic companies. According to Jonathan Murrell, taking the baby boomer generation and the growing obesity rates into account vastly shifted market projections.
Jonathan Murrell found that old age and obesity were the two factors that contributed to the top reasons for knee surgery. Discovering these shifts allowed Jonathan Murrell to revise the 2012 revenue forecasts to a more accurate picture for orthopedic companies. Since completing this research and analysis with Fidelity Management & Research Company, Jonathan Murrell has focused on the demographic changes in various markets as a more accurate way to predict market trends.
“It’s a cause and effect scenario,” Jonathan Murrell explains. “Analyzing the demographics is the ‘cause’ and allows you to predict the ‘effect.’“
Research and analysis is nothing new to Jonathan Murrell. In 2003 when he worked with Citigroup Global Markets, Jonathan Murrell interviewed sector traders to determine the best strategy for internal trade sales.
Jonathan Murrell states that the most important part of demographic analysis is understanding that different demographics will have different inherent needs and wants. Realizing that the baby boomer generation was maturing into retirement age and that obesity rates have accelerated allowed Jonathan Murrell the flexibility to revise market projections for orthopedic companies in 2012.
It’s the recognition of these small details that differentiate the common financial planner from experts like Jonathan Murrell. Recognizing the demographic change allows you to predict the market trends before anyone else sees it coming. “You have to be ahead of the curve,” Jonathan Murrell states. “It’s no longer enough to analyze the situation after the fact. You have to predict it before it happens.”
Jonathan Murrell currently serves as the vice president of Wells Fargo in Dallas, Texas.
